Major D Leadership
Self-Command for Frontline Leaders

Master Yourself.Lead Your Team.

Soft skills aren't soft. They're inner skills — the hardest thing you'll ever train, because they don't start with what you say. They start with who you are before anyone's watching. It's the foundation behind everything I write and teach — the books, the training, the work itself.

The Hard Truth of Command

Frontline leaders aren't burning out because they're weak. They're burning out because they were trained to perform — never to close the gap between who they are and how they lead.

A checklist buys compliance. But you can't lead from a vessel you're running into the ground. Command of others begins with command of yourself. That's the work we do here.

The Framework

The Sovereign Center

Change yourself, and your environment changes with you. Real authority isn't granted by rank — it's grown from the inside out, where two forces meet: the introvert's depth and the extrovert's reach. Master both, and you lead from clarity instead of reaction.

Internal

Master of Self

It starts here. The discipline of the inner life: protecting your energy, reading your own baseline, and growing without abandoning who you are. The quiet command beneath the rank.

Self-
Command

Where inner stillness becomes outer influence, and outer influence returns as inner peace. The point of balance you lead from.

External

Influence in the Room

What inner change makes possible: reading human dynamics and raising the capacity of the people in front of you. When you change, the room changes. Outer influence, applied with intent.

What You'll Build

Clarity. Capacity. Authority.

01

Protect Your Energy

Stop operating far from your natural baseline. Learn to recognize the true cost of performing, and live and lead in a way that holds up over the long campaign.

02

Change Your Environment

When you change, the people around you change with you. Raise the capacity of your team — and every relationship that matters — through human dynamics, not volume. Practical frameworks for bridging the introvert / extrovert gap where it actually plays out.

03

Own Your Authority

Develop the inner authority that lets you serve others without losing yourself. You don't need to become someone else to lead well.

Our Nation's next generation of leaders won't always be the loudest in the room — they'll be the ones who understand leadership starts from within and learn to first command themselves. Larry Doxtater has crafted an exceptional guide that bridges timeless self-mastery with modern leadership realities. The Sovereign Leader cuts through standard management theory to reveal that sustainable authority begins within. Intellectually sound, deeply practical, and highly recommended.

A must-have for every leader's professional library.

The Sovereign Leader is long overdue in every space of business where leadership is tasked to execute, model for those they lead, and navigate succession. A leader's Gravitas, Clarity, and Credibility are critical for today's high stakes. The Sovereign Leader is a must-have for all leaders' and influencers' professional library of relevance.

A guide to refocus, rethink, pause, and reflect.

Larry Doxtater's authentic, real-life storytelling pulled me in from the very start. It is a tremendous guide for leaders faced with complexity and change. For all those looking for continuous improvement and a better understanding of themselves and those they lead, I am sure this work will help you in your leadership and life journey… to refocus and rethink, to pause and reflect, and to find the bridge, the middle, your balance to handle the challenges that lie ahead.

It shows you how to stop being at war with yourself.

Larry Doxtater doesn't ask you to be more confident — he asks you to stop performing confidence you don't have, because he did it for sixteen years and it put him in the emergency room. Most leaders carry both Fire and Water and were only ever trained to trust one. The Sovereign Leader is the rare book that doesn't ask you to pick a side — it shows you how to stop being at war with yourself.

Dr. Renea Skelton

He had the courage to understand when to do self-care.

The traits of a true leader is one who steps back to observe the entire picture. Larry has led from the front, and had the courage to understand when to do self-care. This is a critical acknowledgement of a true leader.

About Major D · The Story

Born to Be.Trained to Lead.

For more than 27 years, I wore the uniform of the United States Army. To the outside world, I was the consummate driver — the leader who could command a room and carry the weight of an organization's expectations.

Larry Doxtater in U.S. Army uniform

But behind the rank…

The hidden reality is: I was born a deep introvert.

Every day, leadership pushed me into an extroverted world. I became what I call a Performative Extrovert — the officer who could command a room on cue — while underneath I was an Exhausted Introvert, paying the quiet price of operating far from my natural baseline. I could nail the briefing and walk out of it hollowed.

That gap is where I did the real work. Because a checklist produces compliance — but leading yourself requires something harder: Self-Command.

If you've ever known that gap — the confident performance on the surface, the depletion underneath — then you already understand why this exists. And you're in the right place.

About Major D · The Second Career

The Mission Beyondthe Uniform.

After retiring from active service, I dedicated my second career to adult education and organizational growth. True leadership isn't about shouting louder; it's about understanding human dynamics and maximizing small-unit capacity.

The exhaustion I felt in command wasn't unique to me — it's the silent cost of leading without balance. My books and frameworks bridge that gap: helping introverts find their outer influence, and extroverts find their inner peace.

Built on Principles
The inner framework comes first: Self-Command, and the discipline to lead yourself before you lead anyone else.
Tested in Command
Forged across 27 years in uniform, where an idea either holds under pressure or it doesn't.
Proven in Practice
Refined over 18+ years teaching it in the civilian world — and in every leader it's changed since.

The Larry Doxtater Perspective

Behind the Name

A young Larry Doxtater

In the classroom, the boardroom, or on the front cover of a book, I'm Larry Doxtater — focused on strategy, self-command, and ground truth.

But when the engine stops, the work is done, and the noise fades — whether on the open road with my Harley, out at sea, or around the Sunday dinner table — I answer to names I like a whole lot better.

Rank, titles, commands, and credentials all fade into the background. Being Poppa, Grandpa, Pops, and Tater to those “Tater Tots” is the baseline that anchors everything else.

Whether you know me as Larry or Taterpop, the mission remains unchanged: to give leaders — and anyone brave enough to govern themselves first — a practical path to clarity, capacity, and personal authority. So you can stop performing, protect your energy, lift the people around you, and actually learn to enjoy every minute of the journey.
